Overview of Flores, Indonesia
Flores is an island in Indonesia, known for its beautiful landscapes, and diverse ecosystems. If you’ve heard of Komodo Island (where the Komodo dragons live), then you’ve heard of Flores. The island is full of adventurous and cultural experiences, making it an excellent destination for travelers looking to explore beyond the typical tourist paths (aka Bali).
Places to Visit in Flores, Indonesia
Labuan Bajo: Often the starting point for trips to Komodo National Park, Labuan Bajo is a small fishing town with a growing tourist infrastructure. It has awesome sunsets and is known for being a local fishing town. Numerous dive shops and restaurants cater to tourists heading out to see the Komodo dragons or explore the rich marine life.
Ruteng: Situated in the mountainous area of Manggarai, Ruteng is known for its cool climate and jungle surroundings. It is famous for the Ruteng Pu’u Village, a traditional Manggarai village where visitors can see conical houses and learn about local customs. The area is also known for its spider web rice fields, a unique agricultural method where fields are laid out in a circular pattern to resemble a spider’s web.
Bajawa: This town is a great stop for those interested in cultural tourism. It is surrounded by traditional villages such as Bena and Wogo, each known for their megalithic structures and traditional houses. Bajawa itself has hot springs and views of the Inerie Volcano.
Komodo National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage site, this park is famous for its Komodo dragons, the largest lizards on earth. The park includes several islands such as Komodo, Rinca, and Padar, and offers spectacular opportunities for hiking, snorkeling, and diving among vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life.
Mount Kelimutu: Known for its tri-colored crater lakes that change colors due to mineral reactions, Kelimutu has one of the most surreal sights in Indonesia. The three lakes, each with different colors ranging from turquoise to dark green and even red, are a must-see at sunrise when the changing colors are particularly mesmerizing.
Pink Beach: Located on Komodo Island, this beach is famous for its pink-tinted sand, a result of crushed red coral mixed with white sand. It’s a great spot for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding marine park.

Best Time to Visit Flores
The best time to visit Flores depends largely on the type of activities you’re interested in. Generally, the dry season from May to September is the best time to visit, as it offers sunny days and not a ton of rain.
If you’re interested in experiencing cultural events or prefer fewer tourists, the shoulder seasons—late in the year around October and November, and early in the year around February and April—are also good times to visit. These months provide a good balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists, making it easier to explore at a leisurely pace and often at lower costs.
The wet season, from October to April, brings heavier rainfall. This time would be good for those who don’t mind a bit of rain and are interested in seeing to see the island’s greenery at its peak. This season offers a unique charm, as the waterfalls and landscapes are particularly stunning, and the island is less crowded.
**I traveled here in December, right in the middle of rainy season. It rained most days, but only for a short time. Mornings were beautiful and sunny, then a storm would roll in in the afternoon, then it would roll out for a chill night.
